Centre for India Studies, Auroville

This project is sited within an existing campus of buildings done in 70’s style with exposed concrete and cantilevers. The building is to accommodate research rooms, conference centre, exhibition and offices. The site has large trees and so we kept the design simple, minimal and tropical. The play of materials is between rammed earth walls, waste cuddapah stone strips and exposed concrete. The play of vistas connecting the space to the natural landscape is achieved with large punctures through the building with bridges and walkways. The trees are integrated with minimal intervention landscaping to allow for informal outdoor study and meeting spots.
